Support to the Sugar Sector
Objectives: The specific objective is efficiency and net income of smallholder sugar farmers sustainably increased by 2010 by improving support services and enhancing the environmental sustainability of sugar production.
The target is that small holder production costs will be reduced by 30% up to 2010 (baseline 2005: 150,000 TSH per tonne of sugar produced).
Activities: •1. Improve estate irrigation and infrastructure;
2. Increase productivity and sustainability of outgrower farms;
3. Strengthen research and testing;
4. Increase cane productivity;
5. Improve recoveries by 5% at all factories;
6. Address environmental impact aspects of production
7. Establish safer working conditions
8. Improve export facilities;
9. Ensure phytosanitary requirements addressed;
10. Establish co-generation projects at all estates;
11. Establish ethanol plants;
12. Upgrade National Sugar Institute (training);
13. Improve estate health and education services
