Mahale ecosystem management project


Objectives:
- Conservation of the Mahale ecosystem's outstanding tropical forest biodiversity and the livelihoods and environmental security of communities mutually strengthened
- Management of forests and other natural resources in the Mahale ecosystem sustainably improved

Activities:
- Establishment and use of park-community cooperation mechanisms for increased benefits to both Mahale Mountains National Park and local people
- Utilising an ecosystem approach to planning and monitoring based on management priorities and threats identified between stakeholders
- Building partnerships and consensus between stakeholder organisations
- Promotion of equal representation and opportunities for women, refugees and the poorer members of society, within the bounds of local cultural norms
- Use of Geographic Information Systems for participatory identification of exceptional natural resources and management zoning
