Support Contribution by Delegation of the European Commission in Tanzania


Building community roles and incentives in ecosystem conservation and management: piloting the ecosystem approach in Africa's Serengeti and North Luangwa


Objectives:
- Key African ecosystems are providing lasting and wide-ranging biodiversity conservation and human livelihood benefits
- Policy and practice that enables local communities to play a central role in ecosystem conservation, sustainable use and management are strenghened through the piloting of the Convention on Biological Diversity's ecosystem approach in two of Africa's outstanding ecosystems

Activities:
- Establish decentralised and cross-sectoral institutional mechanisms for effective collaboration between diverse stakeholders in ecosystem management
- Understand ecosystem structure, function, service and management needs and improve priorities
- Strengthen institutional capacity for management of ecosystem natural resources, especially with regard to local communities
- Develop and strengthen incentives for local communities to be responsible custodians of ecosystem resources
- Establish adaptive management systems based on monitoring of ecosystem health, develop and disseminate lessons learnt
