Support Contribution by Delegation of the European Commission in Tanzania
BEST RAY (Bringing Energy Services to Tanzanian Rural Areas)
Objectives:
Overall objective: to contribute to reach the Millennium Development Goals, particularly that on poverty alleviation, by providing access to sustainable energy services to poor un-served rural communities of Tanzania and stimulating new productive activities
Specific objective: to provide access to energy services to poor rural communities living in scattered, isolated settlements of Oldonyo Sambu and Ngarenanyuki Wards through appropriate, affordable and sustainable technologies and a good governance of the energy sector.
Activities:
-Strengthening Arusha and Meru Districts knowledge, planning and management capacities in the energy sector
-Establishing two CERCs where rural people can access energy services, select most appropriate technologies and learn about them
-Apply Renewable Energy Technologies (RETs) to provide social public structures (schools, health centres, etc.) with electricity, hot water, Internet and media access
-Set up an “Energy minibus” with demonstrative RETs and improved stoves to encourage people (women in particular) to use them (HIV/AIDS risks will be also addressed).
-Provide training, equipment, methodology, technology, and institutional assistance to start small businesses in the energy sector.
-encouraging cultivation of Jatropha or fast growing trees for charcoal production.
