Support Contribution by Delegation of the European Commission in Tanzania


A community based mental health and development programme


Objectives:
To provide mentally ill people access to medical treatment and development opportunities to enable them to protect their rights and meet their basic needs

To capacitate local and national systems and organisations to integrate mentally ill people into community-based care and development opportunities in Mtwara

Activities:
- Training of 20 psychiatric health workers as trainers of trainers in community mental health and development
- Training of 160 general health workers in community mental health
- training of 400 volunteers on mental health and support them in home follow-up and community awareness
- Partnership with district council health management team to promote integration of mental health
- Support health workers to conduct outreach clinics
- Train Self Help Groups to advocate for the rights of mentally ill people and in income generation, managing funds and basic accounting
Conduct participatory community dilaogue with carers and communities on supporting mentally ill people
Development of information, education and communication materials, conduct radio shows, thematic research...
