USAID

USAID is the largest contributor of U.S. Government (USG)assistance in Tanzania. USAID responds to Tanzania’s development challenges and to the Government of Tanzania’s (GOT) Development Vision 2025, to help accelerate the country’s progress towards sustainable development.
Assistance is tailored to the capacities and commitment of the GoT, and addresses key U.S. concerns, including counterterrorism, anti-corruption, HIV/AIDS, malaria, family planning, and education. The main focus of the programs are to:
• Improve health services and delivery
• Conserve the country’s natural-resource base
• Give more Tanzanian children, especially girls, access to quality basic education
• Promote democratic governance through increased public accountability and strengthened civil society
• Increase security and strengthen Tanzania’s nascent private sector

Sectors / Areas of Support

• HIV/AIDS: To enhance and extend HIV/AIDS programs in the primary areas of Prevention, Treatment, and Care.
• Health: To increasing the use of Reproductive and Child Health Services while Malaria Initiative supports distribution of free nets and indoor spraying.
• Economic Growth/Environment & Natural Resource: focus on agriculture and the conservation and sustainable use of targeted ecosystems and improve productivity and market access.
• Democracy and Governance: 1) Building capacity of selected parliamentary committees. 2) Strengthening civil society organizations for policy advocacy and fighting corruption.

Approach to Supporting Civil Society:

In five years, under the USAID strategic plan the focus is to create the conditions under which CSOs will be able to turn the government’s attention to issues of public importance and advocate for key policy reforms. Capacity building in organizational development and advocacy will be provided to help these organizations address issues of concern to citizens and allow citizens a channel for participation in government decision-making processes.

Strategical Framework/Country Strategy of Cooperation in Tanzania:

USAID/Tanzania has a 5 year strategy 2005 – 2010 and Mission’s goal is to “Improve the Quality of Life in Tanzania”. The program addresses Tanzania’s chief development challenges. The focus is to strengthen Tanzania’s nascent private sector, remove obstacles to economic growth, promote democratic governance through efforts to increase public accountability and strengthen civil society, counter the spread of HIV/AIDS and other infectious diseases, conserve the country’s natural resource base, and give more Tanzanian children, especially girls, access to quality basic education.
