UK (DFID)
The global mission of UK’s Department for International Development (DFID) is to lead the British government’s fight against world poverty. Our work is centred on the UN’s eight Millennium Development Goals which aim to: halve the number of people living in extreme poverty and hunger; ensure that all children receive primary education; promote sexual equality and give women a stronger voice; reduce child death rates; improve the health of mothers; combat HIV & AIDS, malaria and other diseases; make sure the environment is protected and build a global partnership for those working in development.
The UK’s Department for International Development (DFID) is the largest bilateral donor in Tanzania. We work with the Government of Tanzania and other donors to promote poverty reduction, sustainable development and growth in the country.
Tanzania is DFID’s largest programme in Africa. DFID’s assistance to the country has tripled from £40 million in 1997/98 to £120 million in 2007/08. This signifies the UK’s increased commitment to help Tanzania reduce poverty and achieve the UN Millennium Development Goals.
