Embassy of Denmark

The Danish development policy, Partnership 2000, is the foundation for Denmark’s co-operation with the developing countries. The overriding objective of Danish development policy is poverty reduction. Denmark seeks to reduce poverty by promoting sustainable development through pro-poor economic growth with equal participation of men and women, by promoting human development through expansion of the social sectors and by promoting democratisation and popular participation in development process.

Denmark’s development cooperation with Tanzania commenced in 1963. From 2007, Danish assistance is provided as an integral part of a Joint Assistance Strategy shared by all donors in Tanzania.

Sectors / Areas of Support

In the period 2007-2011, the Danish support of the implementation of the Joint Assistance Strategy will focus on four main areas
• A dynamic business environment
• Public health.
• Management of natural resources.
• Budget support, which goes directly to Tanzania’s Ministry of Finance and helps fund the implementation of Tanzania’s Strategy for Growth and Reduction of Poverty.

In addition, Denmark will support:
• Democracy and good governance.
• Public administration.
• Cooperation between Tanzanian and Danish companies.
• Refugees and the local communities hosting them.

Approach to Supporting Civil Society:

Cooperation with and support for the development of civil society in developing countries has always been an integral part of Danish development cooperation. Agricultural organisations, the cooperative movement, the trade union movement and the women’s rights movement have all played an important role in the development of Danish society and democracy.

The Danish strategy for assistance to civil society in developing countries (which can be downloaded at (www.um.dk) outlines general principles for Danish support to civil society in developing countries. These principles are implemented in ongoing Danish sector support within health, environment, business and good governance.

Overall, the strategy stresses that promotion of democratisation and popular participation in development process, and building a society based on the rule of law and good governance are preconditions for stability in economic, social and political development. Promotion of popular participation is achieved by actively involving women and men in decision-making processes and developing the capacity and possibility of poor communities to participate in social processes.

Strategical Framework/Country Strategy of Cooperation in Tanzania:

The strategy for Denmark’s development assistance to Tanzania 2007-2011 outlines the overall framework for current Danish assistance to Tanzania. The document can be downloaded from the homepage of the Danish Embassy in Dar es Salaam.
