Delegation of the European Commission in Tanzania

Hello and welcome. We are the Delegation of the European Commission and have our offices in Dar-es-Salaam, in Umoja House. Our Delegation is one of over 120 representations that the European Commission, as implementing body of the EU policies, has set up in countries around the world.

The European Union has a long-standing relationship with Tanzania. Tanzania is among the ACP (African, Caribbean and Pacific) Group with whom the EU has a history of co-operation agreements dating back to 1975 providing parameters for trade, development, and political relations. The latest agreement being the "Cotonou Partnership Agreement", named after the capital of Benin, was signed in June 2000 for a period of 20 years. The Cotonou Agreement is the legal basis and conceptual framework for ‘bilateral’ co-operation agreements between the EU and individual ACP countries.

Sectors / Areas of Support

In Tanzania we are supporting macro-economic reforms, infrastructure, education, agriculture, water, environment, and governance, including strengthening non-state actors for engagement in national processes, through both our country strategy and a rich portfolio of projects.

ECHO, the European Commission’s humanitarian office, provides support to the refugee operation in the northwest of the country.

Approach to Supporting Civil Society:

As per the Cotonou Agreement, and in recognition of both the important contribution non-state actors have made to the provision of social services, and their growing role in democratic processes, the European Commission supports both innovative projects that provide services to communities in line with Government policies, as well as it facilitates the growth of non-state actors in advocacy and policy engagement.

Strategical Framework/Country Strategy of Cooperation in Tanzania:

Our current Country Strategy Paper, financed by the 9th European Development Fund (EDF), was signed in 2001 and is ending 31 December 2007.

The amount below covers the country strategy support, 9th EDF, bar the support to projects and the water facility. Funds under this strategy have all been committed. The 10th EDF country strategy will be implemented subsequently.
